And tonight:
He’s Slippin’ ‘Em Bread … Dig? After a long absence, Christopher (David Sutcliffe) reappears in Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Rory’s (Alexis Bledel) lives with an offer to make up for lost time. Luke (Scott Patterson) struggles with what the new person in his life will mean to him and his relationship with Lorelai. Lorelai and Rory enjoy their first Thanskgiving at the Dragonfly Inn, during which Rory receives surprising news about Logan (Matt Czuchry). Meanwhile, as the band prepares for an important showcase performance, Lane (Keiko Agena) has to deal with Zach’s (Todd Lowe) jealousy over a song Brian (John Cabrera) wrote about her. Singer/songwriter Carole King guest stars as Sophie, the owner of Stars Hollow’s music shop. Melissa McCarthy, Yanic Truesdale and Liza Weil also star. The episode was written by Daniel Palladino and directed by Kenny Ortega.
Later, crocodiles.
I have to watch this again when I’m not half-asleep and hammered, but this felt very interstitial to me. And I don’t like lying, covery-uppy Luke and having him talk out the logical rationale before ignoring it doesn’t mean that it makes sense for him not to follow it.
You know what struck me? There was no chemistry between Luke and Lorelai – it was like they were completely unconnected. That actually seemed kind of cool and realistic in a way, although I hated it. I’m hoping his sister breaks the news soon, so we can get past all of this and figure out what he and Lorelai are going to do.
I did like the phone call from Logan’s sister – and Rory’s reaction. I also hope that Zach and Lane are over. I really didn’t like that relationship.
And of course Christopher just has money dumped on him – it’s not like he’s going to earn it or anything!
I think eventually, once her relationship with Rory has stabilized a bit, that Lorelai will be thrust in the uncomfortable position of trying to broker a peace between Rory and Emily. We got a bit of that in this episode, when Lorelai (quite rightly) pointed out that Rory has no basis to compare the experience she had with Emily and Richard to the experience she herself had. I think that Emily saw her granddaughter making mistakes, and reacted the only way she knew how. No matter how Rory feels about it, and no matter how unpleasant Emily did it, she was just trying to look out for her granddaughter. Maybe, if Lorelai is able to recognize this, it will in some small way help her forgive her parents for how she was treated. Maybe there will come a time when Lorelai and Rory attend the Friday night dinners, not out of obligation, but because they actually want to attend. Then again, maybe not.
I called it right on Luke’s changed feelings towards Christopher’s involvement in Lorelai’s life. I hope this doesn’t mean that Christopher is going to be lingering around for a while. Does he seriously no longer have any designs on Lorelai?
I think it’s too early to declare the relationship with Logan over yet, much as I find myself hoping otherwise.
The whole band thing confounded me. I did like the tambourine player, though.
Happy Turkey Day!
