- The ever-fabulous Colleen has read Cecil Castellucci’s forthcoming Beige and apparently loved it as much as I did, which is to say LOTS. Closer to the release date I will sing the full praises of this novel, but I will say that I believe this is my favorite book of Cecil’s to date and that’s no small thing. Plus, it made me go listen to lots of my favorite punk bands. Pre-order Beige now; I’ll wait.
- J.L. Bell ruminates a bit on the hot topic of point of view.
- Chicken Spaghetti has all the links from participants in yesterday’s Poetry Friday.
- The divine Carolyn Kellogg (aka Pinky) alerted me to a call for submissions from Hot Metal Bridge, the new literary mag of the University of Pittsburgh’s MFA program, which will debut in April. Go forth and submit.
- Colum McCann’s new novel Zoli is loosely based on the life of famed Polish Gypsy poet Papusza.
- Cory Doctorow loves the conclusion of Justine’s trilogy so much he’s BoingBoinged it. It’s sitting over on the kitchen table right now, waiting for me to get a spare moment, but I suspect I’ll be seconding his opinion.
- Why has Grey’s Anatomy been sort of sucking this season? Could it be Marti Noxon’s influence? (Scroll to the very end of the post.)
- Aurealis Award winners? Anyone?
UPDATE: Gavin has posted an unofficial list of Aurealis winners in the comments. Guess I’m finally going to have to break down and read Monster Blood Tattoo.

Not 100% sure, but here’s the I-think-these-won but I took no notes so this will have to do until Locus or someone posts the proper list.

I’d be interested to see what you think of “Monster Blood”, Gwenda. I tried to read it for a column last fall but it seemed too heavy on cliches for me. The reader is expected to accept a lot of stuff as just spontaneously happening in the first few chapters (casual meetings with the exact right people on the street, etc.) and I couldn’t do it. It also bugged me that the girl who has been training her whole life gets whacked right off the bat by wonder boy who doesn’t have a clue but is suddenly “the one”. So just like that she has to start answering to him. That might be a problem more for female readers than male, but it rubbed me the wrong way.
I quit about 1/3 of the way through though so maybe it gets a lot better. I just couldn’t hang in there.
Thanks for mentioning Hot Metal Bridge! We do want your submissions, it’s true. Metallic, warm, cold, whatever.
